Overview

Youth & Mentorship is a year-round program for ages 13–22 focused on creative skill-building, identity development, and exposure to working media careers.

Mentorship model

A blend of 1-on-1 mentor matches and small cohort sessions. Mentors are working filmmakers, photographers, podcast producers, and editors from across Northern California.

What youth learn

  • Storytelling fundamentals
  • Camera, lighting, sound
  • Editing & post
  • Interviewing
  • Pitching ideas
  • Career navigation

Media career pathways

Internship placements, guest masterclasses from working professionals, and direct introductions to partner studios and nonprofits.

Workshops and training

Monthly skill workshops paired with longer project sprints so youth ship real work, not just exercises.

Community-based learning

All projects connect to a real Sacramento community story. Civic media, not classroom busywork.

Youth production opportunities

Active production credits on CKP podcasts, documentaries, and community story projects.

Parent / guardian information

Programs run after-school and weekends with clear schedules and communication. Most programs are free or sliding-scale; tuition assistance is available.

School and organization partnerships

We bring Youth & Mentorship into schools, libraries, and community organizations as residencies and after-school programs.
